Essential Oils

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oil is a natural product extracted from a single plant or resin species. Not all plants produce essential oils, but in the plants that do, the essential oil can be extracted from different places such as the roots, stems, leaves, flowers, or even fruits.

Essential oil is the thing a plant will produce when they feel under attack in order to protect themselves from harm or disease. Naturally occurring essential oils in plants help with infection control, humidity control, hormonal effects, wound healing, and attracting or repelling insects, birds, and animals. Which is exactly why we want them for our bodies. To protect and support.

Essential oils can help alter our physical, mental, and emotional well-being by triggering and strengthening our body's own natural processes. They are made up of tiny molecules that can deliver properties to the systems that control our physiological state.

Remember how your mama told you not to write on your skin, that the ink would seep right into your bloodstream? Well, she was totally right. Everything we put on our skin, in our bodies, or even inhale, heads straight to our bloodstream which makes it pretty scary when we read ingredient labels on our food and everyday products, right?!

Essential oils do the same exact thing. Only they work even faster and actually help to support our bodies as intended, not fight against them! The following are the typical ways we use essential oils!

TOPICALLY

This means applying oils directly to the body. We always recommend you dilute your YLEO with a carrier oil - like coconut oil or grape-seed oil - until, at the very least, you know how your body is going to react to the oils. Some essential oils are considered “hot” oils, so you’ll always want to use a carrier oil with them. Thieves, PanAway, and Peppermint are some examples of hot oils that should always be diluted. Using essential oils topically is a great way to use your oils quickly and effectively!

AROMATICALLY

This simply means to breathe in the oils. Using your diffuser is the easiest way to get your essential oils into the air. And bonus points: your whole house can reap the benefits when diffusing. But you can also put a drop or two in your hands and cup them over your nose and mouth and breathe deeply. Or even just take the cap off the bottle and breathe it in.

INGESTING

You guessed it. This simply means to ingest essential oils by swallowing them - either in a drink or food or by filling a vegetable capsule. Some people are very comfortable with ingesting and others aren’t. This is a very personal choice and we won’t judge based on your decision either way. Not all oils are made to be ingested, so please refer to the label of each oil for proper usage instructions. NOTE: All “Vitality” oils are part of Young Living’s dietary oils line and are GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) and can be ingested if you choose to do so. The reason we’re comfortable ingesting Young Living’s essential oils is because of their Seed to Seal commitment. That’s a big reason why we choose Young Living!
